Introduction
Vastu Shastra is the original architectural science. Codified in the Vastu Vidya tradition between 6000 BCE and 600 CE, it predates feng shui, predates the Vitruvian principles of Roman architecture, and predates almost every other documented system of directional energy placement in the human record. And yet it's been reduced, in the consumer software market, to a horoscope-grade quiz that asks where your bed faces.
This guide is different. Every rule we discuss is cited against a primary source — usually Mayamata (a 12th-century compendium), Manasara Shilpa Shastra (around the same era), or Brihat Samhita (Varahamihira, 6th century). Where modern interpretations diverge from classical text, we say so. Where regional schools disagree, we name the schools.

What we DO claim: the rules are internally consistent, derivable from primary sources, and verifiable against classical text. Whether they match your worldview is up to you.
- Why don't you just use a single 'vastu standard' rather than citing multiple sources?
- Because there isn't one. Vastu in Tamil Nadu (Manasara school) differs from vastu in North India (Mayamata school) on several rules. We label which school each rule comes from. If you want a single 'standard' answer, you'll have to pick a school first.
- Does MiAstrea share my floor plan with anyone?
- No. The scan runs in your browser via WASM. Nothing is uploaded. We can't see your plan even if we wanted to.
- Is the AI verdict actually AI, or is it a rule engine?
- Both. The geometric/directional analysis is a deterministic rule engine — same input, same output, every time. The AI layer (optional) summarizes findings into a readable report and suggests low-disruption remediations. Rule verdicts are never AI-generated. AI summaries are clearly labeled.
- Why is this free?
- Because charging ₹699 for a vastu scan that any deterministic rule engine can produce in under a second feels like the kind of thing we're trying to displace. Premium features (PDF reports, expert verification) are credit-gated. Basic scan is and stays free.
